Welcome to The Greasy Fork

June 10, 2008

It has long been our dream to produce a single source for biscuit and gravy lovers to go and find where the best eateries in Rockford are for this heavenly food.

While some don their business suits and set off for the fancy, shmancy places to get their breakfast—such as IHOP, Denny’s, and Perkins—we know that the average working man only eats his breakfast in establishments where he can seat himself.

What do these hardy, robust men eat? Biscuits and Gravy.

5 Coins

June 10, 2008

by Jake

Some may disagree, but like whip cream on a Hot Fudge Sundae, a good conversation can distract from the proper analysis of a plate of biscuits and gravy during any breakfast. This morning Shannon and I found ourselves torn between a discussion with a few of our friends on much more weightier matters than the intricacies of whether the gravy tasted like it came from a bag. But in keeping our motives to review the B&G close in our pockets, we silently took our notes noticing all the non-verbal cues that set apart a good gravy from a great one.

When you’ve tasted one bagged gravy you’ve tasted them all. I hate to say it but 5 Coins offered nothing to be remembered. Now this doesn’t necessary mean that you’d be wasting your time, but it does mean that you shouldn’t make a special trip. The service was great, although, I made it almost a game to finish my cup of coffee before our waitress could top it back off. I could see that Shannon found the same game to be a thrill as his eyes dilated from the absurd amount of coffee he drank. It brought back memories of being in high school and playing the Buckle Game in the Mall. Oh, those childish times; and yes I didn’t mistype. I was in high school. So onto the review

Disappointment

May 29, 2008

by Shannon

About once every four months or so I fly down to North Carolina for meetings with some dear friends and colleagues, and since this is the location I worked at previously I am always excited to hear about what is new.

Let me begin by saying that about three years ago, we moved our offices from the metropolis of Rocky Mount, NC (pop. 65,000) to Whitakers, NC (pop., at best 650). We would often joke that Whitakers was the bedroom community of Rocky Mount, but that was just to make the twenty-minute drive past cotton and tobacco fields seem more glamorous.

When I lived there, there was a classic dive named “Lisa D’s”. This was a converted gas station, adorned with fifteen-year-old Dale Earnhart posters and a 1997 Nascar schedule on their walls. No matter what you ordered it came on a flimsy paper plate with a stack of the one-wipe-and-done napkins.

The Wildflower Café of Colorado

May 12, 2008

by Jake

Arriving in Denver early for a conference can have its perks—especially when you take the time to drive through the mountainous region of Route 70 and discover a rare treat nestled into a valley of the Rockies. A quick exit toward Evergreen and a sharp left turn, to avoid a splash into a lake, finds you in the town of Evergreen, Colorado.

The town is small. It reminded me of an old miner’s camp. A walk on a wooden boardwalk takes you past The Wildflower Cafe, Colorado’s version of a greasy spoon breakfast diner with a touch of Colorado’s version of the Hippie. My curiosity really got a hold of me. On one window, “Breakfast & Lunch Cafe” and on the other “Thursday Night Sushi”. It was the only restaurant open for breakfast, so I went in.

Stockholm Inn

May 9, 2008

by Shannon

The Stockholm Inn will be one of the very few restaurants we review that has a website, but we felt it was necessary to begin with this eatery because it is a Rockford icon. According to their website they are Rockford’s “favorite restaurant” and they serve 2,500 breakfasts each weekend. Wow! That means they must have some serious pucks and sauce.

We arrived for breakfast at 7 a.m. on a Friday and it was clear they relied on the weekend crowd to pay the bills because this day there weren’t too many people eating. The service was prompt and friendly with our waitress serving us a thermos of coffee and handing us two menus.

But wait, there’s more!
